The word Pentecost means 'fifty'.
It is the fiftieth day after the Passover sabbath. It is also called the Feast of Weeks, which was one of the Jewish feasts or festivals. When we talk about Pentecost today, we are talking about the Pentecost that came fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It was during this Pentecost that the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the first followers of Christ. Thus, from an historical point of view, Pentecost is the day on which the church was born. Pentecost marks the coming of the Holy Spirit on the disciples to empower them to take the message of the KofG to the world. Pentecost is the fulfilment of two promises … 1) an Old Testament promise– Joel 2:28, which says “I will pour out my Spirit on all people”, and 2) a New Testament promise- where Jesus says He will send another Counsellor, Comforter, Spirit of truth, or the HS, to live in each believer (Jn 16: 5-15). Today we want to acknowledge and welcome the presence of the HS, the third part of the God head- Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
